Combining alternative energy sources with energy efficiency measures allows industry to significantly reduce costs. To support consultants and managers in this challenge, the PotencializEE Program has launched the “Guide to Alternative Energy Sources” (Guia de Fontes Alternativas de Energia), which presents the types of renewable sources available on the market and suggests criteria for industries to implement them in their operations.
According to data from the 2021 Energy Balance of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Brazil stands out globally for its use of renewable sources, which account for 45.2% of primary sources and 84.8% of electricity generation – made up of hydro (65.2%), biomass (9.1%), wind (8.8%) and solar (1.7%).
The alternative sources most widely used in industry are plant and residual biomass, solar thermal energy and process waste heat. In the food and agribusiness industries, it is common to install organic matter biodigesters to produce biogas, which can meet both the electrical and thermal energy demands of processes. The return on investment is, on average, short term, and it also means the company is no longer exposed to volatility in electricity and fuel prices.
Thus, the “Guide to Alternative Energy Sources”, offered free of charge by PotencializEE, is a handbook on how a small or medium-sized industry can improve its energy results by choosing the right alternative source. It provides technical guidance for accelerating energy efficiency in industries in Brazil.
