Embrapa plans to add 18 solar plants starting in 2023, which will allow 20 more of the company’s units to be supplied with energy generated from renewable sources. This initiative aims to achieve savings and economic and environmental sustainability. It is the result of funds made available by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) for the Energy Self-Sufficiency Program, implemented three years ago.
With the expansion, Embrapa will have a total of 29 solar units. According to the General Management of Infrastructure and Sustainability (GIS), the solar park is expected to generate 27,975,288 kWh/year, which would represent annual savings of R$ 8.1 million for the company.
The choice of locations follows certain technical criteria – the 18 plants will serve twenty units, because some of them will generate energy or credits for more than one decentralized unit (UD).
In three years, Embrapa’s Energy Self-Sufficiency Program has already delivered results above target.
This type of initiative brings not only the environmental benefits of generating clean, renewable energy, but also a significant reduction in the company’s costs. By the end of the year, one third of the energy consumed by Embrapa is expected to come from solar generation, with self-sufficiency to be achieved by 2030.
